Description
Linville Falls Water Flow Being Compressed
As the water flows down from the twin falls area this is where the water enters a narrow gorge and becomes compressed and gains a great deal of speed and volume.
Total height of the beautiful Linville Falls is approximately 150 feet, starting at the upper falls area the water flows into a very tight twisting gorge where the massive amounts of water become highly compressed, noisy and move at very high speed to round the corner and exit on the rock face for its final fall of about 45 to 50 feet into the plunge basin. Linville Falls has the highest volume of any waterfall on the northern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Beautiful area to hike in, take in all the natural beauty and admire a most beautiful and popular waterfall. It is said this is the most photographed water fall in North Carolina. If you plan on parking at the Official Park Visitor Center, which has restrooms and a gift shop, it is advised to arriver very early in the morning as parking can become a frustrating and supreme challenge, especially on the weekends. We parked in the US Forest Side parking lot, arrived early and found parking to be no problem. When we finished our hike the parking lots was packed full and cars were parked up and down both sides of the dirt access road for hundreds of feet. The US Forest Service parking lot is unpaved, as is the access road, and there are no facilities however it is a very short hike from there to the falls.
